Lions bolster squad with new recruits

The Seymour Lions have bolstered their senior football squad with several recruits committing to the club for the 2025 Goulburn Valley League season.

Sam House joins the Den after multiple seasons with Hurstbridge in the Northern Football League and will bolster Seymour’s forward line. House signed with GWS’ VFL and previously represented the Northern Knights in the Coates Talent League.

Joining House up forward is Cam Osmond, recruited from Lancefield/Assumption College with the ability to play a high or deep role within the forward line.

Also bolstering the Lions’ key position stocks is Tom Gawthrop, a towering 196cm key position player from the Woodend Football Club following junior football at the Calder Cannons. Gawthrop is a versatile player, who can play across centre half back or present as a spearhead forward in front of goals.

Another recruit with high level experience is Tom Jeffrey. A 186cm utility, Jeffrey has represented the Aspley Hornets in the NEAFL and the Brisbane Lions in the VFL.

A recruit from closer to home is Lachy Beattie, brother of 2024 SFNC B&F winner Nathan, who is joining the Lions after a few dominant seasons with the Yea Tigers. Before that Lachy played across half back with the Whittlesea Eagles, becoming a key player within their back six.

Finally, 2024 KDFL McNamara Medallist Rielly Old has been recruited from Nagambie. Rielly is a big-bodied midfielder who will add great versatility to the Lions midfield group this season.

Lions’ Senior Co-Coach Jack Murphy said the club was excited about the prospects of the senior group in 2025.

“We had a bit of a mixed season last year with injuries and some lapses in games which cost us a place in the top six,” Mr. Murphy said.

“We’re pleased to have retained the majority of our squad from last season, and with a young list, there is still plenty of growth ahead.

“Thanks to some injuries, we were able to blood a lot of Under-18s players in senior footy last year, and it will be pretty competitive for spots come the start of the season.

“All our new recruits have great footballing experience and IQ and will add plenty to our senior squad.

“We’re still working on a few players and hope to have some announcements in the month ahead.

“We’re looking forward to getting through the rest of pre-season and putting our best foot forward in Round 1.”

The Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) will celebrate a significant milestone this weekend, with Senior Co-Coach and Captain Jack Murphy set to play his 150th senior game for the Lions. Since making his senior debut in 2015, Murphy has established himself as one of the premier players in the Goulburn Valley League. Over the past decade, Murphy has built an outstanding football resume. A dual Senior Best & Fairest winner, GVL Interleague representative, League MVP and former Coburg VFL player, he has consistently performed at an elite level while representing the Lions with distinction. While his individual achievements are impressive, Murphy's influence extends far beyond the football field. Renowned for his professionalism, work ethic and commitment to the club, he has played a significant role in driving standards and helping develop the next generation of Lions players. Now serving as Senior Co-Coach, Murphy continues to lead from the front each week and remains one of the competition's most influential midfielders. SFNC President Peter Elliott said Murphy's contribution to the Lions over the past 11 seasons has been remarkable. “Murph has been an outstanding servant of our football club and thoroughly deserves this recognition,” Mr Elliott said. “His achievements on the field are exceptional, but it's the way he goes about it that sets him apart. “He's one of the hardest workers at the club, a fantastic leader and someone who is so passionate about the success of the Seymour Lions. “He's represented our club with distinction throughout his career and continues to set the standard both as a player and coach. “To reach 150 senior games is a fantastic achievement and one that both Murph and everyone associated with the club should be proud of. “We're incredibly fortunate to have had Murph at Seymour for so long and look forward to seeing him continue to make an impact in the years ahead.”
