In the game of the day, the Lions emerged victorious by a single goal to keep a fast finishing Rochester at bay.

It was a tight opening half with the Lions going into the main break just five goals up.

Andrea McKenzie, Chloe Butterworth and Ash Webster showed strong connection.

The defensive combination of Madi Hager, Georgia Engel and Toni Bootland shut down the Rochester attack with great defensive pressure over the ball. Toni picked up where she left off in 2024, stepping up a grade and showing her skill, dominating the defensive circle.

It looked like it was set to be another close contest with Rochester taking a slender lead into half time. After the break, the Lions came out energised and managed to keep the Tigers scoreless for the rest of the game while piling on seven goals of their own. Nic Davey made a fantastic return, finishing best on ground in a great all round performance. Tyler Clarke and Sam Fuhrmeister also impressed around the ground while Jay Eager was a strong presence from the first bounce. Cam Osmond and Jack Radford were impressive in their debut games for the Lions, proving a deadly combination. Will O’Sullivan had the crowd in raptures with his return to the game, displaying great forward craft. A superb start to the season for the Reserves. The first quarter saw the Lions’ best effort of the match with a couple of goals and Rochester only holding a four point lead. Tom Jeffrey bagged his first goal for the Lions early on, with Lucas Cavigan and Lachy Giles doing likewise later in the day. Rochester put the game to bed in the second quarter kicking seven goals while the Lions were held goalless in the third term before eventually going down by 79 points. Nic Quigg worked hard all day in the middle alongside Jack Murphy and in great news for Lions fans, Dylan Cook played a solid game in his return to senior footy. New recruit Lachy Beattie fought hard down back while Lucas Cavigan put his best foot forward on debut. A tough day for the Lions who will be looking to bounce back at home next week. The Seymour Lions have bolstered their senior football squad with several recruits committing to the club for the 2025 Goulburn Valley League season. Sam House joins the Den after multiple seasons with Hurstbridge in the Northern Football League and will bolster Seymour’s forward line. House signed with GWS’ VFL and previously represented the Northern Knights in the Coates Talent League. Joining House up forward is Cam Osmond, recruited from Lancefield/Assumption College with the ability to play a high or deep role within the forward line. Also bolstering the Lions’ key position stocks is Tom Gawthrop , a towering 196cm key position player from the Woodend Football Club following junior football at the Calder Cannons. Gawthrop is a versatile player, who can play across centre half back or present as a spearhead forward in front of goals. Another recruit with high level experience is Tom Jeffrey . A 186cm utility, Jeffrey has represented the Aspley Hornets in the NEAFL and the Brisbane Lions in the VFL. A recruit from closer to home is Lachy Beattie , brother of 2024 SFNC B&F winner Nathan, who is joining the Lions after a few dominant seasons with the Yea Tigers. Before that Lachy played across half back with the Whittlesea Eagles, becoming a key player within their back six. Finally, 2024 KDFL McNamara Medallist Rielly Old has been recruited from Nagambie. Rielly is a big-bodied midfielder who will add great versatility to the Lions midfield group this season. Lions’ Senior Co-Coach Jack Murphy said the club was excited about the prospects of the senior group in 2025. “We had a bit of a mixed season last year with injuries and some lapses in games which cost us a place in the top six,” Mr. Murphy said. “We’re pleased to have retained the majority of our squad from last season, and with a young list, there is still plenty of growth ahead. “Thanks to some injuries, we were able to blood a lot of Under-18s players in senior footy last year, and it will be pretty competitive for spots come the start of the season. “All our new recruits have great footballing experience and IQ and will add plenty to our senior squad. “We’re still working on a few players and hope to have some announcements in the month ahead. “We’re looking forward to getting through the rest of pre-season and putting our best foot forward in Round 1.”
