Lions welcome home favourite son

The Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) is delighted to announce the signing of 376-game AFL superstar David Mundy for the 2024 Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season.

Mundy was recruited from Seymour as pick 19 in the 2003 AFL Draft, going on to enjoy an illustrious career as one of the competition's top midfielders over two decades.

Among a range of incredible achievements in his AFL career, Mundy is Fremantle’s all-time games record holder and only eight men have played more games in the history of the competition.

Mundy was an All-Australian in 2015, won Fremantle’s Best and Fairest in 2010 and captained the club in 2016.

SFNC President Gerard O’Sullivan said the club is excited to welcome Mundy home in what is a huge boost for the club.

“It’s an amazing signing for the club and we can’t wait to see Dave back at Kings Park where it all began,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

“Dave is an incredibly humble person and has made clear for a while his desire to come back to Seymour and get back to country footy.

“Having one of the most experienced footballers in the history of the game trotting round in the GVL is going to be a great boost for our club and the competition more broadly.

“We saw when he hung up the boots there was still plenty left in the tank. There’s no doubt he’ll be giving a few opposition coaches headaches in 2024.”

Mr O’Sullivan said Mundy would fit into a strong midfield ready to go deep in September.

“We’ve got a great young side with plenty of room to improve after a bit of a disappointing finals series last year,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

“Mundy will slide into our midfield nicely and will no doubt be passing on some important lessons to our boys. We’ve got some young players who already have VFL experience and it will be huge for their development to play alongside a legend of the game.

“There’s a really strong bond in our current team and an exciting vibe around the club. I’d encourage everyone to get around the Lions in 2024 in what will be a huge year for us.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Dave, Sally and his family to the club. They’re top quality people and it’ll be great to have them around.”

The Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) will celebrate a significant milestone this weekend, with Senior Co-Coach and Captain Jack Murphy set to play his 150th senior game for the Lions. Since making his senior debut in 2015, Murphy has established himself as one of the premier players in the Goulburn Valley League. Over the past decade, Murphy has built an outstanding football resume. A dual Senior Best & Fairest winner, GVL Interleague representative, League MVP and former Coburg VFL player, he has consistently performed at an elite level while representing the Lions with distinction. While his individual achievements are impressive, Murphy's influence extends far beyond the football field. Renowned for his professionalism, work ethic and commitment to the club, he has played a significant role in driving standards and helping develop the next generation of Lions players. Now serving as Senior Co-Coach, Murphy continues to lead from the front each week and remains one of the competition's most influential midfielders. SFNC President Peter Elliott said Murphy's contribution to the Lions over the past 11 seasons has been remarkable. “Murph has been an outstanding servant of our football club and thoroughly deserves this recognition,” Mr Elliott said. “His achievements on the field are exceptional, but it's the way he goes about it that sets him apart. “He's one of the hardest workers at the club, a fantastic leader and someone who is so passionate about the success of the Seymour Lions. “He's represented our club with distinction throughout his career and continues to set the standard both as a player and coach. “To reach 150 senior games is a fantastic achievement and one that both Murph and everyone associated with the club should be proud of. “We're incredibly fortunate to have had Murph at Seymour for so long and look forward to seeing him continue to make an impact in the years ahead.”
